Vertical Cantilever

Vertical Cantilever pumps are designed for installation in a sump or tank where it is desirable not to have a bearing in the pumpage, having only the casing and impeller submerged in the pumpage for priming. The support bearings for the rotating element are located remotely above the pumpage in a dry environment. There are no throttle bushings, bumper bushings, or rings of any type located at the impeller or submerged below the maximum normal water level.

Capabilities:
Flows to 20,000 GPM (4,540 m3/hr)
Heads to 300 ft (91 m)
Temperatures to 700° F (371° C)

All casings are heavy walled for long life. Enclosed impellers are available with front and back repelling vanes to minimize axial thrust loading and reduce recirculation. All impellers (except Refrax®) are keyed to the pump shaft and secured using an impeller nut. Impeller clearances are easily adjustable at the thrust bearing location. No foot valves are used. The pumps are capable of operating dry with no adverse effects.

Design Features

All shafts are designed to operate approximately 30% below the first critical speed. Shafts are sized so that the pump can operate from zero flow to full run out; therefore, the complete capacity-head range is available without restriction. The shafts are machined and finished throughout the entire length so that the total indicator runout is not more than .005" at the impeller bore. Heavy duty, anti-friction type, thrust and radial bearings are located in all pumps, above the maximum normal water level. These bearings accomodate all axial and radial loads without transmitting any loads to the driver. Static and dynamic balancing of the entire rotating element is available.

Labyrinth seal, or completely enclosed design, bearing housings are available for severe duty service. Shaft packing or seals can be furnished when necessary to confine fumes or pressure in the vessel. To minimize vibration and provide rigid supports, a heavy, ribbed bearing frame and thick cover plate are standard features.

Grease lubrication is standard, although oil mist, forced oil, or internally circulated self contained oil lube systems are available. Both v-belt and direct drive motors are an option.

Mounting Arrangements

Cantilever pumps are avaliable in base, hip, or shoulder mounted arrangements, based on the depth of the sump or tank and the maximum mormal and minimum water levels. The most common design for a Cantilever pump is the base mounting, where the bearing frame is mounted above the cover plate. This arrangement is typically used when high temperature fluids or toxic liquids are being handled, as a sealing device is required at the cover plate.

Suction Tailpipe

Used for bottom suction pumps only, a suction tailpipe is often added to allow the pump to empty the vessel to a much lower level. When the liquid level surpasses the impeller, the pump primes itself and begins pumping. No special priming devices are required. The tailpipe is designed for smooth entry and controlled velocity. A large, basket- type screen is available to prevent oversized solids from entering the pump.
